On December 8, 2015, we got a call on our helpline to come rescue a little street dog who had been hit by a vehicle and was unable to stand. When our ambulance reached, we found a little girl trembling with fear and pain, hiding in thick brambles. The young girl, no more than 7 or 8 months old, was dragging her back legs and was unable to stand. It was obvious right away that she had either never had a loving interaction with people before or maybe no interaction at all–she didn’t want to be touched and started snapping as soon as we came near.
Rescuing her was difficult, but despite her growling and attempts to bite, we managed to wrap her up in a warm blanket and rescue her from those bushes and bring her back to Animal Aid.
Back at Animal Aid, we treated Bella with anti-inflammatories, pain medication and lots of rest. Bella had suffered severe damage to her spine and had lost the use of her hind legs. She still has feeling in her hind legs but is not able to stand on them.
Around the world, dogs with hind leg paralysis are often euthanized on admission. But at Animal Aid we believe that life is far from over for a dog just because they are handicapped. Depending on the level of injury and their ability to get around using their front legs, we give disabled dogs the chance to live and love again in our sanctuary.
It us more than a month to gain Bella’s trust, but once we did, boy was it worth it. Today, Bella is one of the sweetest girls you could ever meet. She ‘runs’ over to see you, rolls on her back and loves to give kisses.
Thank you so much for sponsoring Bella and giving her the life full of love, play and protection that she so deserves. With your sponsorship’s vital help, Bella will live in sanctuary at Animal Aid for the rest of her life.
