Puppy recovers after almost dying from distemper
We received a call on our helpline that a puppy who had been healthy and fine just a few days before was now collapsed on the side of the road, unable to stand or even move. When our ambulance reached we found her lying in the hot sun, her eyes almost closed shut from discharge.
The most beautiful part of rescuing this darling little girl was that even when she was collapsed on the side of the road, unable to move because of the disease distemper, she started wagging her tail the moment we approached. Distemper is an often fatal virus that affects young and frail dogs, and her condition was very critical. She was malnourished and there were wounds on her hips indicating that she had been unable to stand for several days. Back at Animal Aid, we started her on antibiotics to fight the infection and I.V. fluids, and to our sheer delight, within a few days she started to walk again. After two weeks of intensive treatment, she has fully recovered.
