Blind dog rescued after traumatizing incident
We received a call on our helpline that a dog was trapped by the side of lake Swaroop Sagar in Udaipur that had recently become very full after heavy rains. We rushed to the rescue fearing that the dog might be drowning or the water level could be rising. When we reached the area we were told by the caller to come inside the grounds of an office complex right next to the lake and we were led by a guard to a garden next to the lake. He pointed towards some brambles and told us the dog was inside the brambles.
We peered down and saw an elderly looking dog curled up in a ball very close to the water’s edge beneath a thick canopy of thorny bushes.
We learned that the poor dog had been stuck there for two days without any food. We also learned that she didn’t just wander into the hole by herself, but had been violently chased by one of the guards of the office complex who was trying to chase her away.
Rescuer Rajkishore slowly inched closer to the dog pushing aside the thorns and when we finally reached her, although she was very fearful, she did not bite when he picked her up.
As soon as she was out of the hole, we realized that she was completely blind. It made us sick to think of the guard chasing her when she was completely disoriented and unable to defend herself or even run away. She had been too afraid and helpless to come out of the hole though she must have been so hungry and scared.
We brought her with us right back to the shelter where we gave her IV fluids to treat her dehydration.
The healthy and fit animals who heal are returned to their neighborhoods but for this girl, who we named Rose, this was impossible. We have welcomed her into our sanctuary where she will live and be cared for every day for the rest of her life.
